Apple Intelligence is coming to China with Alibaba’s Qwen: features, iPhones and date

Apple confirms Apple Intelligence will launch in China with iOS 27.3 in December, with Alibaba's Qwen powering parts of Siri and Writing Tools. Here's what's included and which iPhones work.

After about two years of waiting, Apple Intelligence is finally coming to China. Apple has confirmed that its AI features will launch there in December with iOS 27.3, and that Alibaba’s Qwen AI model will power parts of Siri, Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence. Developers can start testing on November 4. Here’s what’s included, which iPhones work, and what’s missing.

What Apple announced

Apple made the announcement through its China newsroom at the end of October, confirming an earlier Bloomberg report. The key points:

  • Developer beta: starts November 4, 2026
  • Public launch: with iOS 27.3 in December
  • AI partner: Alibaba’s Qwen handles requests that need a large AI model
  • Approval: according to The Next Web, China’s internet regulator approved the setup in July

Which features are included?

The first release includes Apple’s own features:

  • Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone calls
  • Writing Tools to rewrite, proofread and summarize text
  • Visual Intelligence to ask about what your camera sees
  • Clean Up to remove unwanted objects from photos
  • Genmoji for custom emoji
  • Priority Mail and notification summaries
  • Type to Siri

What does Qwen do?

Qwen is Alibaba’s family of large AI models. According to Apple, Qwen supports “both text and image understanding.” In China, it will work inside:

  • Siri: Siri can pass some questions to Qwen for broader knowledge.
  • Visual Intelligence: ask questions about photos and documents, including PDFs and presentations.
  • Writing Tools: use Qwen to create original text.

Users can sign in with a Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple. This is similar to how ChatGPT works with Apple Intelligence in other countries, but with a Chinese partner that meets local rules.

Apple Intelligence is reaching China about two years after its US debut, with a Chinese AI partner built in.

Which iPhones are supported?

According to Apple’s announcement as reported by The Apple Post and The Next Web:

  • iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 16 and newer models
  • iPhone Air
  • iPhone Duo (read our iPhone Duo review guide)

Siri and the device language must be set to English or Simplified Chinese. Apple says support for other Apple devices, like Macs and iPads, “will follow after the necessary regulatory approvals are received.”

What’s missing?

The biggest thing missing is Siri AI, the rebuilt, smarter Siri Apple showed at WWDC 2026. It is not part of the first China release, along with Apple’s other newest AI features. Siri AI recently added five new languages, but mainland China is still not included.

Apple has not explained in detail how Qwen requests are processed or where the data is stored. We’ll update this article if Apple shares more about privacy.

Why this matters

China is one of Apple’s biggest markets, and the lack of AI features has been a weak spot against Chinese rivals like Huawei, Xiaomi and Vivo, whose phones already ship with local AI assistants. Bringing Apple Intelligence to China could help iPhone sales there.

It also matters for investors. Apple reports its quarterly earnings on November 2, and China sales are always closely watched. See our guide on what to watch in Apple’s earnings. ByteTidings does not give financial advice.

What it means for you

  • If you live in mainland China and have a supported iPhone, update to iOS 27.3 when it arrives in December.
  • If you’re a developer with apps in China, test your app with the iOS 27.3 beta from November 4, especially features that use Writing Tools or Siri.
  • If you live elsewhere, nothing changes for you. This is a China-only setup.
