iPhone Duo screen cracking: what’s causing it and what to do if yours breaks

Some early iPhone Duo owners say the folding screen cracked within hours. Apple says it's aware of the issue on a small number of units, and iFixit's teardown points to a possible cause. Here's what to do.

Smartphone with a cracked screen on a blue surface

Apple’s first foldable phone, the $1,999 iPhone Duo, went on sale on October 23. Within days, some owners began reporting a worrying problem: the inner folding screen cracking along the hinge, in some cases within hours.

What are owners seeing?

  • A noise when opening or closing the phone
  • A crack down the middle of the inner screen, along the fold
  • Often a bright line of stuck white pixels across the display

One owner in Australia said their phone cracked after about six hours and fewer than 20 openings. Photos have been shared on Reddit and the MacRumors forums. Reports have grown, but they still appear to involve a relatively small number of units, and MacRumors noted that some images circulating online appear to be AI-generated. Reviewers who tested the phone before launch didn’t report the problem.

What does Apple say?

Apple said it is “aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units.” Affected customers should contact AppleCare for a replacement.

  • You don’t need AppleCare+. The standard one-year warranty covers defects from normal use.
  • If you bought from a carrier, contact AppleCare directly.
  • Apple hasn’t named a cause, announced a fix or issued a recall. Replacement stock in stores may be limited.

What could be causing it? iFixit’s teardown

Repair experts iFixit took an iPhone Duo apart and used CT scans to investigate:

  • The cracks cluster near the central hinge support bar, just below where a display cable passes under the screen.
  • One possibility: the support bar doesn’t fully drop when the phone closes, creating a pressure point on the screen.
  • Other possible factors include a trapped particle (like a grain of sand), repeated bending or a manufacturing variation.
  • In a dust test, fine particles reached the hinge and made it crunch. iFixit noted the hinge itself isn’t sealed against particles.

iFixit stresses this is a hypothesis, not a confirmed cause. CEO Kyle Wiens said “a manufacturing variance or grain of sand can kill the fragile display panel it protects.”

Folding screens are an engineering marvel, but they’re also delicate. First-generation foldables from other brands had similar early problems.

Repair costs

  • Inner screen, out of warranty: $999
  • Replacing the screen’s cover layer: $49 without AppleCare+, $19 with it
  • iFixit repairability score: 5/10 (provisional), the best it has given a foldable so far

What to do if you own an iPhone Duo

  1. If your screen cracks: contact AppleCare right away for a replacement. Don’t try to fix it yourself.
  2. Still within 14 days? You can return the phone if you’re worried.
  3. Keep it clean: avoid pockets and bags with sand, dust or crumbs, and close it gently.
  4. Consider AppleCare+ for extra protection, given how expensive screen repairs are.
  5. Document problems: take photos and note when issues start.

Should you still buy one?

If you’re thinking about buying, it may be wise to wait a few weeks to see whether Apple identifies the cause and whether newer units are affected. Read our full guide: iPhone Duo: price, specs and should you buy it?
